Soft Tracks Bring Results The rain had to come at some stage and thankfully the skies opened in June. A couple of Rockmount graduates appreciated the softer conditions under foot and the first of those was River Lena at Bendigo on June 13th. Trained by Brian Mayfield-Smith and ridden by Corey Brown, the 4 year old Spectrum mare relished the going and won comfortably over the 1400 metre trip. Owned by Darley, River Lena’s pedigree suggests that she will appreciate a further step up in distance as her sire’s optimum trip was a mile to a mile and a 1/4 and she is out of a Secretariat mare. It was sad to note recently that Spectrum’s own sire Rainbow Quest died after an outstanding stud career. No doubt his daughters will continue on his legacy at stud. Cefalu hadn’t won a race in Australia since being imported here from South America, but that all changed on June 23rd in heavy conditions atMoonee Valley. The 5 year old gelding by Dushyantor has had his fair share of problems but after an intense 7 weeks in Rockmount’s water walker he was able to win the Geoff Torney Cup over 1509 metres. Trained by Lee Freedman and ridden by Willie Hernan, Cefalu saluted at the very nice odds of 40 to 1 !! |
