Kav's The One In Ballarat Cup

Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Mark Kavanagh has capped off a spring to remember with a win in the Listed Ballarat Cup (2200m) with Itstheone.

Kavanagh is currently enjoying a purple patch of form with Itstheone giving Kavanagh his 18th win from his last 50 runners, including a Melbourne Cup win with Shocking, with 14 of those pretrained at Rockmount.

Kavanagh’s stable foreman Merv Harvey said it was good to see Itstheone go on with the job after turning a solid performance behind stablemate Raffaello last time out at Flemington.

“He put the writing on the wall the other day and he put in a good honest run today,” he said. “He deserved to win and he’s won well.

“It was a very good ride by Kerrin. Kerrin was keen to ride him over 2200 metres and that’s always a good sign when a jockey wants to ride him.”

For McEvoy, the win on Itstheone added to a special day for his family with his son Charlie celebrating his first birthday.

“It’s my first Ballarat Cup which is a big thrill,” he said. “Especially on my little boy’s first birthday.”

Harvey said Itstheone would continue with his preparation through the summer months.
