Cats Whisker On Fire

The Mark Kavanagh trained mare Cats Whisker has been in rare form this spring posting three wins and a close second from four runs, her most recent success coming on Saturday at Flemington with a stylish victory in the Group Two VRC Blazer Rose of Kingston Stakes.

Ridden by Sydney jockey Hugh Bowman, the Rockmount pretrainer raced handy as usual and then accelerated down the running to score a strong win in the 1400 metre event, defeating Gold Water by the best part of a length.

“It looks like a strong Caulfield Cup this year so we’ve decided to keep her to the mares races, which suit her so well,” said Mark Kavanagh.

“She makes her own luck and puts herself in a great position, all we have to do is keep her happy and she keeps fronting up and doing this.”

A daughter of Kentucky Derby winner Fusaichi Pegasus, Cats Whisker has the tidy record of six wins and four placings from 13 starts with prizemoney just shy of $600,000 and will seek Group One glory later in the spring in the VRC Myer Stakes over 1600 metres at Flemington on Derby Day.
