Patience Pays Off For Pirates
Four year-old Redoute’s Choice gelding Pirates won his second successive race when saluting at Mornington on Thursday and while it’s unlikely he will measure up to the achievements of his siblings Fairy King Prawn and Easy Rocking, he is on the improve and heading in the right direction. Breaking his maiden by a head at his previous appearance at Kilmore on August 11, the Jason Warren trained Pirates enjoyed at step up in distance to 1520 metres, coasting clear to win the Class One event by the best part of three lengths as a well backed favourite. With two wins and two placings from five starts, Pirates is a lightly raced horse with his whole career ahead of him. A $300,000 purchase for Robert Roulston Bloodstock from the Willow Park draft at the 2007 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale, Pirates is the 11th foal of Group Two winner Twiglet, who has done a sterling job at stud for her owner Catherine Remond. A daughter of renowned broodmare sire Twig Moss, Twiglet is the dam of eight winners led by Group One stars Fairy King Prawn and Easy Rocking, not to mention stakes-winner Crevette, while another daughter Dora Maar is the dam of stakes-winner Mrs Kipling and Rockmounts Sacha Royale. Many of the female members of this family are being bred to commercial sires so it is a family due for a resurgence.
