The Peter Moody trained Markus Maximus pulled off a hit and run coup at Ascot on Saturday, winning the $500,000 Group 1 WATC Derby.

Markus Maximus was expertly handled by Victorian leading jockey Luke Nolen but the three year old had to survive a protest from the third placegetter Phenomenons.

It was the third career win for Markus Maximus, taking his stake earnings to $352,000 while Nolen now has a forth Group 1 trophy to put on his mantelpiece.

This is the sixth individual Group 1 winner for the calendar year pretrained at Rockmount.
