Group 1 Double

Rockmount’s pretraining expertise came to the fore on Saturday March 21st when Bel Mer and Typhoon Tracy both scored at the highest level.

Price achieved an emphatic result in the Robert Sangster Stakes with his reliable mare Bel Mer, her first Group 1 success.

Bel Mer jumped smartly from the gates and was able to cruise in to a handy spot in transit before Newitt took the daughter of Bel Esprit to the front at the 300 metres under a throttle-hold.

Newitt had no need to ask Bel Mer to extend until the 150 metre mark and the pair went to the line as soft two-length winners over the bolters Hidden Energy and Impressive Eagle.

The Robert Sangster Stakes win came at Bel Mer’s seventh attempt at winning a group one race and took her career earnings to over $570,000 from her 16 start career.

Caulfield trainer Peter Moody said it was unlikely he will start his potential superstar Typhoon Tracy in the Doncaster Handicap despite winning a Group one at only her fifth start in the $600,000 Group 1 Coolmore Classic at Rosehill on Saturday.

“I know it’s an old bullshit line but we are just taking it a run at a time,” Moody said.

“I’d love to say the Queen Of The Turf but we’ll just take her home and see how she pulls up.”

“She has come a long way in such a short time.”

Having only her fifth race start, Typhoon Tracy overcame barrier 15 and a weight disadvantage against older and proven Group One performed mares to remain unbeaten and give winning jockey Glen Boss his 64th success at the top level.

Typhoon Tracy was fired out of the barriers and took up the running, getting away with some cheap middle sectionals, and on straightening she got the wanders and drifted out but when challenged she found plenty and defied her rivals in the run to the line.
