Whobegotyou Seeking to Emulate Helenus Star three year-old Whobegotyou dazzled the big crowd at Moonee Valley on Saturday with another virtuoso performance to win the Group Two MVRC AAMI Vase, placing him on track to emulate the performance of another Widden Stud graduate in Helenus. The Mark Kavanagh trained Street Cry (IRE) gelding was allowed to settle at the rear as is his pattern of racing before being saet alight by regular partner Michael Rodd coming towards the home turn. Whobegotyou zoomed around his rivals and kept going, coasting to the line to win the 2040 metre event by a couple of lengths from lightly raced Buffett with Orca in third place. “He’s a good horse this one,” declared a delighted Mark Kavanagh, although when queried on whether he’d made the right choice in opting for the Vase rather than the Cox Plate he was quick to defend his decision. “If he was going to win the Cox Plate he should have won that by five. I thought he raced like a Derby horse today and we can always come back here on this day next year.” Whobegotyou was offered for sale by Widden Stud at the 2007 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and passed in shy of his $25,000 reserve before being later sold privately from the paddock to earth moving contractor Lawrence Eales for whom he has now won five of seven starts and $908,950. |
