Caulfield Guineas Triumph for Whobegotyou The Group One MRC Caulfield Guineas on Saturday provided a result for the battler with the Mark Kavanagh trained and Rockmount pretrained Whobegotyou - a gelding that cost less than $20,000- upstaging blue-blooded Darley owned colts Time Thief (Redoute’s Choice $2million) also a Rockmount pretrainer and Von Costa de Hero (Encosta de Lago $1,2million) to score a resounding victory. A dominant winner last start in the Group Two MVRC Stutt Stakes at Moonee Valley, Whobegotyou (pictured left) again produced that trademark whirlwind finishing burst accelerating from midfield to race straight past the Darley duo in the 1600 metre ‘classic’ to score by three and three-quarter lengths. “He’s done everything right in this preparation, he hasn’t had one setback,’ Kavanagh said. “He just keeps improving, it’s starting to get a bit exciting now, he was awesome that horse today. “We always had the Guineas in mind for him and the Derby this time in, we’ll go into the AAMI vase with him next and then into the (Victoria) Derby, and not the Cox Plate. “He’s a gelding so there’s plenty of time for Cox Plates with him, we want to have some fun with him, not burn him out young”. Whobegotyou was offered for sale by Widden Stud at the 2007 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale and passed in shy of his $25,000 reserve before being later sold privately from the paddock to racing enthusiast Lawrence Eales, whose primary business is in earth moving. The powerhouse dark chestnut won on debut at Geelong on May 23 and followed up with a metropolitan win at Moonee Valley on June 21, before finishing an unlucky second to Sugar Babe in the Group Three MRC McNeil Stakes. Luckless when unplaced in the Group Three MRC Guineas Prelude, Whobegotyou bounced back to take the Stutt and the rest is history. With an overall record of four wins and a second from six starts and prizemoney of $783,950 the best is almost certainly still to come for Whobegotyou, who is likely to clash with boom Sydney colt Sousa in the Victoria Derby. |
