October’s Winners

As the equine influenza continued to cripple the racing industry in New South Wales and Queensland, the show rolled on in Victoria through the spring.

Nigel Blackiston has been a great supporter of Rockmount’s facilities for some time and it was great to see his charge Woodwin break his maiden status on October 10th. The Danewin colt has a lot of potential and he beat his stablemate, and fellow Rockmount pretrainer Banvi Maeve, in a mile event at Ballarat.

Mick Price trains all of Devon Park Stud’s horses and Rockmount gave all of them their early education. This is now paying dividends with Apple Crumble losing her maiden tag at Seymour on October 21st over 1300 metres. The cleverly named filly, by Desert Prince out of Danish Pastry, was well ridden by Craig Newitt and more wins are surely in store for this girl. Devon Park’s success continued at their home track of Yarra Valley on October 27th when Hanover Fist saluted the judge for the 2nd time this campaign. Dale Smith steered the Flying Spur mare to victory and there is no reason why she can’t continue on to more success.

Dan O’Sullivan is a good friend of Rockmount’s and it was great to see Montoya get the prize at Hamilton on October 22nd. Sent to Rockmount by noted bloodstock agent Denis Roberts, Montoya is a 5 year old stallion by Rory’s Jester and who has had his fair share of niggling problems. However, a water walker program here obviously has helped his cause and hopefully he will continue on his winning ways.
